Fall Bass Fishing: How To Catch Bass On Spoons

Spoon fishing is easy! Its one of the oldest fishing techniques but most anglers don't have any idea how to fish spoons for bass. The trick to getting bit on a spoon is in the details. From line material to colors, to drop speed, the subtle changes are the difference between catching and wasting time.

As the cool nights set in, the jigging spoon bite is the best it will be all year. Don't be afraid to head out to deeper water in search of schooling fish. If you can find bass around baitfish you've got the recipe for quick success.

We use a variety of spoons to catch the bass. Matching the size of the baitfish can be very important so don't be afraid to change sizes, even switching to a tail spinner or underpin when the bite slows. But if you need a place to start, the 1 3/4 oz Blade Runner is the most consistent producer amongst our spoons.

Ned Rig Fishing For Big Bass

Finesse fishing doesn't always equal big bass but the Ned Rig is special. When the bite gets tough and you're faced with changing conditions it is a great way to upsize your catch! On this day we started with swimbaits and crankbaits but ended up getting all the big ones on light tackle.

The ned rig is a great option when conditions aren't ideal. We were using two different versions of the bait to catch our fish. Tim was using the Roboworm offering while Matt was using the traditional Z-Man TRD.

The tackle...

Ned Rig Challenge!

10 minutes start now! How many can we catch? We've got rising water, heavy flows, and murky conditions. The smallmouth and schooling near running water and there are a TON of them!

We located this school earlier in the day but with the water rising 3 inches an hour there was no telling how many could be pouring into the area. Since we'd already found them and covering water wasn't an issue we settled on the Ned Rig.

Both equipped with a Ned Rig on light line we began making repetitious casts to the same area to create a feeding frenzy. Once they started biting it got serious! They were biting on every cast, sometimes two at a time.

While these aren't the biggest fish in the world it shows how aggressively bass can school and feed together. Below is a breakdown of the gear we were using.

Finding Fish In A New Lake (Without Electronics)

No electronics, no outside help, just two guys with swimbaits and a lake full of quality bass.  Tim and Matt hit a new lake in search of smallmouth bass. Watch the thought process develop as they find and catch fish.

The guys only had one shot at this lake so they started and finished with swimbaits. While they didn't catch any giant bass they were able to quickly raise fish, get bites, and put fish in the boat. These techniques will work on any lake to quickly cover water and identify productive areas.

The baits...
