Is Lake Chickamauga Really That Good? (Big Bass Eats A Spinnerbait)

Chickamauga was amazing! We'd never been to the lake but we had heard the rumors! Is it as good as they say? Can we catch a bunch of fish? How about a big bass? Come along as we head out on the water to see what all the fuss is about on Tennessee's best trophy bass lake. Spoiler Alert: Its good and we catch some big ones!

In 3 days we never struggled to get a bite and we caught fish on every lure that we threw. From senkos up shallow to deep cranks offshore, there we bass everywhere! The trick was figuring out how to catch the big ones but after a few days we got it dialed in and had an amazing time catching quality fish all over the lake The key for the bigger bites was shad. There was a shad spawn in the morning and the big bass were keying in on the opportunity.

Below is a breakdown of the baits and equipment we used during our time on the lake. Baits are listed in order of appearance as we caught fish on a variety of lures. If you ever get the chance, take a day to fish Chickamauga, its an awesome fishery!

Spinnerbait Tricks For Spring Bass Fishing

These quick tips will take your spinnerbait fishing to the next level! From color selection and blade style, to subtle changes in retrieve cadence, we're giving you the tools you need to begin catching bass right away. Whether you're fishing muddy creeks or crystal clear lakes, we explain the changes that will make you successful.

Spinnerbaits are amongst the easiest baits to fish for bass. A simple "chuck and wind" approach will catch fish most days. But like any technique, subtleties make all the difference! Knowing when to switch from a painted blade to a nickel blade, or a white spinnerbait to a shad spinnerbait, can be the difference between a couple bites and a day you'll never forget.

Below is a breakdown of our favorite spinnerbaits, trailers, and gear. They're sorted by water clarity and style to keep it as simple as possible. Keep in mind the best weight depends on how deep you're fishing but 1/2 oz is by far the most versatile.

Spring Spinnerbait Fishing Tips and Tricks From Shallow To Deep

Spring is your best shot of the year to catch a GIANT bass on a spinnerbait! Ponds, creeks, lakes, reservoirs, it doesn't matter... bass are moving shallow, they're getting in the cover, and they're susceptible to the flash and movement of a well-placed spinnerbait.

If you could only own one spinnerbait in one color to have your best shot at catching fish on ANY lake, anywhere in the country, I would choose this one...
Revenge Deep Runner, Double Nickel Blades, Blue Shad Color, 1/2 oz Size: http://bit.ly/2oSfWd6

As you branch out and adapt to changing conditions you will need more baits in more colors and blade combinations. 1/2 ounce is by far the most universal spinnerbait. If there is ever a doubt, go 1/2 oz. Its heavy enough to pair with any trailer and light enough to still be fished shallow if speed is adjusted.

If you intend to focus shallow all the time 3/8 is your best size but be prepared to use a 3 1/2 to 4" swimbait trailer instead of a 4-5" swimbait trailer.
On the other hand if you intend to fish deep (Greater than 15 feet), or in current, or if you intent to burn the bait, 3/4 ounce is the best size for you. The beauty of 3/4 is that it can be burned mid range or slow rolled as deep as 30-40 feet.

The only other consideration is night fishing. We really didn't talk about night fishing in this video but if you intend to fish primarily at night I recommend a larger hook (Revenge Heavy Duty, see below) and sizes 3/4 or 1 1/4 oz so that you are no struggling to maintain "feel" in the dark. The heavier blade gives great feedback on bottom and will keep you "connected" to your bait, despite not being able to see.

Here are the baits...
