Blade Bait And Spoon Fishing Tricks For Fall Bass

Blades and spoons are amazing fish catching lures! The trouble is, you have to know how to use them. As bass corral shad and other baitfish, these baits become major players. While the spoon is typically focused around deep water fishing, with modern advances the blade bait can be used both deep and shallow. Here are the details you need to know...

Blade baits have come a long way in recent years. With more advanced baitfish shapes and lifelike color patterns these baits have become shallow water slayers during the cool and cold water  months. When it comes to spoons, we use both jigging and flutter spoons. Jigging spoons are best fished quickly and aggressively around deep schooling bass that are on the move, while flutter spoons can be used more methodically.

Below you'll find links to the exact baits from each category, including our favorite weights and colors for each. We've also included relevant hook and hardware upgrades where applicable. Finally, we've included our exact rod and reel combos for each style, as well as a budget-friendly alternative. Fishing With Spoons: Everything You Need To Know For Fall and Winter

Spoons are one of the most universal lures in fishing but are often overlooked. Today we're taking an in-depth look at jigging spoons. We start with a look inside Matt's spoon box to see exactly what he's using, then we cover how to modify them, the retrieves, and how to use your electronics for this fishing style. Come along as we explore the world of spooning.

In the Fall and Winter the vast majority of big bass school in deeper water. Many lures can't reach these depths effectively. Amongst those that can, the spoon is the easiest to fish and arguably the most consistent producer. Once you know how to adapt the baits and retrieves to changing conditions, you'll be able to consistently spoon for bass throughout the cold water months. Don't miss the details on how Matt modifies these spoons, including how he's bending them to create different actions.

Matt only uses a few baits for this technique but he uses a variety of colors and sizes for different situations. He also modifies his spoons with different hooks, swivels, and bends. Below you'll find links to all the different gear discussed in the video. In addition to the baits Matt has included his favorite spooning rod and reel combos along with the budget combo he has caught so many fish on. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

How To Catch More Bass With Spoons - Fall Bass Fishing

Ready to catch more bass this Fall? The spoon briefly regained popularity when the magnum flutter spoon was introduced but as a whole, its an overlooked tool for Fall bass fishing. Today Matt and Tim sit down together and teach us everything we need to know about fishing a spoon. Tim takes an in depth look at flutter spoons while Matt focuses his attention on jigging spoons.

The biggest misconception about flutter spoons is they need to be fished deep. We've seen great results in 2-6 feet of water around dock pilings in the Fall. Don't be fooled into believing this awesome fish catcher won't work for you! Jigging spoons on the other hand require quite a bit of depth. Most of the bites while fishing vertically come between 20 and 60 feet of water.

There are a handful of tricks that will improve your time fishing spoons. For flutter spoons, Tim recommends adding a swivel to the head of the bait as well as a stinger hook on the line above the lure. For jigging spoons Matt also recommends a swivel but instead of a stinger, he recommends a feathered treble hook for converting wary fish.

Below is a breakdown of the gear the guys discussed and used in the video. We've broken it up by category to simplify it for you.

Fall Bass Fishing: How To Catch Bass On Spoons

Spoon fishing is easy! Its one of the oldest fishing techniques but most anglers don't have any idea how to fish spoons for bass. The trick to getting bit on a spoon is in the details. From line material to colors, to drop speed, the subtle changes are the difference between catching and wasting time.

As the cool nights set in, the jigging spoon bite is the best it will be all year. Don't be afraid to head out to deeper water in search of schooling fish. If you can find bass around baitfish you've got the recipe for quick success.

We use a variety of spoons to catch the bass. Matching the size of the baitfish can be very important so don't be afraid to change sizes, even switching to a tail spinner or underpin when the bite slows. But if you need a place to start, the 1 3/4 oz Blade Runner is the most consistent producer amongst our spoons.
